POPSHow the Grinch Stole Health Care There's a scene from the animated version of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" that fits George W. Bush to a tee. The lines from the poem read: And the one speck of food that he left in the house was a crumb that was even too small for a mouse. Then he did the same thing to the other Whos' houses, leaving crumbs much too small for the other Whos' mouses! But in the 1966 televised adaptation of Dr. Seuss' classic, the Grinch actually goes back for that final crumb, leaving the family with... nothing. This scene is remindful of yet another last-minute move by our president to inflict hardship on those less fortunate than he is. (And what an appropriate time of year for Bush to demonstrate his aptitude for misgovernance.)

POPSScientists Begin to Decode Whale Speak I wonder what they would say to the Japanese whalers, if they could communicate? "Please, don't murder me!" Or, "You Mofo, someday we'll get ya!" I'll bet it's the first...

POPSThanksiving cartoons Be thankful if you have a home and anything to eat. Many don't, try to help those in need if you can.

POPS The California wild fire scam -- Suppressed techology Why did we refuse it then? Did politics and historical animosity get in the way of saving our land, our animals, and our homes? Why was it not called in for this fire? These are questions that the citizens should be asking their Government representatives.

POPSIraq Cabinet Approves Removal of US troops Still, Kevin Drum argues that sticking to the deal would be good for Obama: since this essentially makes his decision to withdraw into a bipartisan agreement. After all, conservatives can hardly complain about Obama following a timetable that was negotiated and approved by Bush. Obama has enough on his plate already, and taking this issue off the table ought to be a considerable relief to him. Hmmm, maybe. But it wouldn't go down well with many progressives who expect Obama to stick to his promises to America before he sticks to Bush's promises to Iraq.

POPSDo Dolphins Have a Sense of the Future? I had a wonderful experience with a mated pair of Hawaiian Bottlenose dolphins...When I was on a longliner Tuna boat we would stop for lunch at the end of the flagline and one day a male dolphin stuck his nose on the gunwale edge and squawked loudly and then swam a sort distance back down the line...then back and repeated the message...we ran down the line until we found his mate, who had tried to steal our bait (Look, honey, free breakfast!) and got hooked on her lip! rather than tear her lip she sent Hubby to us for the rescue! I swear she sat her cute little nose on the gunwale and patiently waited while I removed the hook...thanked us with a flip and some clicxkin, squeeling and swam off! Amazing! This was my first falling in love with Dolphins and Whales came later.

POPSGreenpeace shifting focus to dialogue in anti-whaling campaign
Whaling is a barbaric murderous business and besides the moral implications of killing our friends, great beautiful, graceful, air-breathing, large-brained, socially sophisticated, singing, communicating animals, whaling is just contributing to the more dangerous human impact on killing the oceans. When we finish killing the oceans thru our pollutions and overfishing, we'll be dead. Brutal humanity is disgusting to some of us but not apparently to some here in this forum (Japan Today) and in Japan, Iceland and Norway. Thank the Sea Gods for Sea Shepherd and Capt. Paul Watson who will be In the Southern Ocean aboard the "Steve Irwin" to confront the Whalers again. I have no quarrel with Greenpeace, corporate PR is their forte and they have the $$ for it and they weren't all that effective stopping the whalers anyway, just taking pictures and grandstanding in style, which is OK--it brought some attention to whaling but I have much more respect for Capt. Watson and his dedicated crew in

POPSNo more cluster bombs It's unconscionable that the USA, Russia and China use these and I wonder if the USA still use or sell these horrible civilian killers, Esp in Afghanistan?

POPSCold War Hawks Nesting With Obama Read the whole article for Scheer's view on the business of Hawks in Obama's camp. Disturbing, to say the least, isn't it? Too may Hawks are pouncing on Obama's popularity and could easily co-opt what could have been a new way to Peace. Alas, I am pessimistic about this not-so-new set of policy advisors, like Zbiegnew Brezinski. He reminds me of that ass Kissinger...
