Is this one of many unsolved misteries? Or is there just another way of thinking about it?

People seem to forget -- or perhaps never really knew -- that the end of the world doesn't mean the end of the planet. Your "world" is your bank account, your house, your isolated bubble of perception. The original greek term for "apocalypse" simply meant "lifting of the veil".

Every time someone dies it is the end of the world for that person.

Actually, The Mayan "Long Count Calendar" does not deal with the "end of the world", but the beginning and end of long time spans they called the "World Ages" or "The Suns".

Each world age lasts "13 Baktuns" (ca. 5125.36 solar years) in their "time calculating system" which was based upon astronomical events and cycles that were somewhat significant to the Mayans. According to their Long Count calendar, we are approaching the end of the "Fifth Sun", or the 5th world age, which they believed to come with important changes on "The Earth Element" (geological events that cause catastrophes like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions etc.)

They did not mention "the end of the world" but they prophesie...

Your comment certainly makes a lot of sense invictus. Maybe if the people who already understand the mayan got together, they could figure out the next cycle. Now wouldn't that be exciting.

So far all predictions for "the end of the world," have --- obviously -- been proved wrong.

Yet someone always comes up with another date in the future we're suppose to worry about when the overwhelming truth is that most of us will die before any world ends.

The Mayan calendar is interesting. invictus seems to be well informed about it.

I've seen documentaries that suggest they weren't predicting the end of anything but when we or they come to the end of their big cycles it all just goes back to the beginning and starts all over again.

That sounds about right to me.
